The lion is a royal symbol. Jesus is called "the lion of the tribe of Judah" by the Apostle John in Revelation 5:5. The Messiah is the Promised One. He would be a king like David his father. He would be born in Bethlehem, the city of David, an agricultural center for shepherding, because "out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel" (Matthew 2:6 from Micah 5:2).
