Health Ministry

Kickboxing & Aerobics

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19

The Lord has called us to glorify Him.  We should do this by not only keeping our minds pure, but our bodies as well.  I am thrilled to have exercise as part of our health ministry.  We meet from 6-7 pm every Monday and Friday morning from 7:30-8:15 am. (The Friday morning class begins on August 8th and the Monday class on August 11th.) The class includes routine kickboxing and floor exercises.  We praise the Lord while working out to music that glorifies the Lord…and some that are simply for amusement. (Al Green, anyone?)  Anyone is welcome…regardless of age or size!  Exercises can be tailored to your abilities.

Along with this basic act of discipline, it is also a great opportunity to minister to our community.  The class is $10 per semester, and all are welcome.  It has been a fantastic way to meet new people, both people that attend our church and some that do not.

It is our desire that we would bring people to know the Lord by a commonplace occurrence, as well as encourage those who are on the journey to sanctification.

Health Tips:

  • YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT!  I believe that today’s culture has neglected the importance of our diets. Not only is food key in losing weight (or maintaining), but it is also important to the basic functions of our body. It affects everything. Your mood, your energy level, your brain function, etc…do not take that lightly.   Food plays a huge role in how your body performs.
  • Drink plenty of water each day (at least 64 oz.)
  • Eat raw veggies if you can…steamed lightly if you like them cooked.
  • Fruit is a must! Especially berries (blueberries are the best). They are considered one of the best foods. Stay away from canned or jarred fruits – they have unnecessary amounts of extra sugar. Make sure to read labels before you buy dried fruits, the ingredient list on the package will state whether sugar is added or not.
  • Eat nuts if you’re hungry. Almonds are also one of the best foods to eat. Try to stick to nuts that have nothing added to them.
  • Watch how many sugars you take in…marinara sauce has unnecessary amounts of sugar, as do most dressings and breads.  Stay away from white flour if you can. Eat whole wheat & whole grains instead. Beverages with sugar are one of the worst things for you! They are very sneaky calories. One Washington Post article said, “When you consider that an appropriately sized meal is anywhere from 400 to 700 calories, and one 44-ounce Super Big Gulp is 800 calories, you understand the scope of the problem. A 16-ounce Starbucks blended coffee Frappuccino is 470 calories. Switch to water. Diet sodas are not great for you, but are better than regular sodas.
  • Cut down on your portion size. If you are eating an extremely large amount of food each day, you will not lose much weight…regardless of whether it’s “good” for you or not. Calories do matter! Drink a huge glass of water before you eat so you’ll calm down your appetite.
  • Exercise, exercise, exercise! Walking is a great exercise…no need to get completely out of breath in order to lose weight…in fact, your body burns more fat when you’re working out at a low-impact heart-rate (though this is highly debated amongst fitness experts, it worked for me! I lost 30 lbs. by cutting down my portions –though I ate whatever I wanted -- and walking 40 minutes a day). Use this time of exercise as a way to praise your Maker for your health and His creation.
  • You must exercise at least 3 times a week (at least 30 minutes per day) if you want to maintain your current weight.
  • You must exercise at least 4 times a week (for 30 minutes per day) if you want to lose weight.
