Me and My Buddy

A Moment in God's Word

Read Proverbs 19:6.

ME AND MY BUDDY
You often find them in malls and shopping areas. They have an appeal to visitors, especially foreign guests. They are smiling and dressed according to their character. They are the life size cardboard figures of well-known celebrities and politicians. You can have your picture taken with President Bush or Jamie Lee Curtis or even the Pope.

Of course, these photos are for fun, but some people highly prize a picture with the real person. During the presidential campaign, men and women, young and old scurry to have their pictures taken with their favorite candidate. That picture will increase in value even more if that candidate is elected president of the United States.

About a month ago, Barack Obama refused to allow a man to have his picture taken with the Democratic front-runner. Why? Isn't picture taking an important part of campaigning? Wouldn't Obama want his picture on as many office credenzas as possible? Well, apparently this eager supporter was one of several persons who were getting their pictures taken with the candidate, electronically inserting the faces of other people alongside of Obama, and then selling these pictures. The candidate didn't want to be associates with someone who wasn't a true follower.

I wonder if Jesus ever feels the same way about some who claim to be his followers. For example, would Jesus want to be associated with someone who claims to be a Christian and then blows up an abortion clinic in order to kill the employees? Or, would Jesus want to be associated with people who claim to be Christians and brutalize homosexuals or kill them as what happened a couple of years ago? Or, more personally, would Jesus want to be associated with you or me when he learns what we do or think or say?

All of us are friends of Jesus as long as he is giving way the free gift of eternal life. We curry the favor of our leader and want others to know we are his followers. But are we really?
