"It's God we are answerable to - all the way from life to death and everything in between - not each other. That's why Jesus lived and died and then lived again: so that he could be our Master across the entire range of life and death, and free us from the petty tyrannies of each other." Romans 14:8 & 9 (The Message)

My sister Rachel is one of the greatest women I know. I am just lucky enough to be related to her, so I get the pleasure of being a part of her life. Not only is she a great sister and friend, but she is also a great mother. She is one of those women that could have thirteen children and still have a smile on her face (much like my grandmother). She was born to be a mom. Well, I was riding in the car one day with her and my two nieces, Elizabeth Hope and Eden Faith (Alaina Love was not yet born). It's always very interesting to go anywhere with kids...they are usually curiously surprising. On this ride I was getting to eavesdrop on a conversation between Hope and Eden. Hope was three, Eden was two. Eden was doing something that she should not have been doing. I can't remember what it was because what followed was so hysterical that it overshadowed the act that triggered the response:

"Eden, you should not do that. You know better than that. I'm going to have to put you in time out," Hope said sternly.

Rachel and I looked at each other trying very hard not to collapse in giggles. Rachel turned around with all the composure she could muster and said, "Hope, that is not your job. You are not the momma."
I gave Rachel the "bravo" look to affirm that she handled it well, and turned around to look at Hope. She was very disgruntled from having her seeming power taken away.

You are being fought over daily...hoping that you will give power to anything BUT who it belongs to. We are involved in a discombobulated game of charades.

Charades is a game of acting. Winning is solely dependent upon how well you act. Science does a pretty good job of acting, and successfully wins the game in some cases. Scholars have succeeded as well, leading some to believe that they have put their finger on the heartbeat of the world...that they have eaten the apple and have not died. They have become masters of their own created universe, or so they want to believe.
There was an angel a very long time ago that believed this way. He is now the one that is working to keep you fooled. Satan has done such a good job of his charade that he has fooled some into believing that God is not Master, but that we are free to choose whatever we want to replace Him. It's that whole, "if it feels good, it must be right" mentality that is so popular.

There will always be something in your life that will try to replace God. It may be your job, your theology, your education, your intelligence. Because Satan loves to distort things that God meant for good, relationships can also fight to replace God. We may choose to give in and replace Him, but there is only one, true God. Thankfully, God's power is not contingent upon our behavior. Hallelujah! However, we will never be at peace until we bow our knees to the one true Master. We'll never rest until we stop the charade and realize that those things that are calling the shots are not our "mommas", if you will, but are only pretending. They're playing with your heart and hoping you'll play along.

I can't wait to see the look on Satan's face when he realizes that the game is over. His seeming power will be taken away, and he will be thrown into a lake of fire. And whatever it was that we gave our allegiance to will lose its power over us: intellect, religion, science, relationships -- their thrones that we prescribed to them will all melt in the presence of the One True God. God is the Master. He is it...He is the "momma". No games.

Lord, help us to believe that the power is all yours. Keep Satan and his lies far from our hearts. Help us to be able to filter everything through Your Word and who You are, so that we will live as wise followers of You. I pray that we would take a long look at whatever it is that is trying to steal Your spotlight, and say, "You are not the momma," and then take a knee. It is for your glory that we live, Father. Amen.
